Is art a matter of individual expression, as the Romantics say? Or is it an endeavor of portraying God-given Truth as the artist has experienced it? How can well-crafted poetry lead men to God, and not focus attention on the poet? Herbert humbly – but with beauty and power – gives us images of his soul-struggles, that we might be encouraged and nurtured.

LOIS WESTERLUND has an M.A. in English Literature. and in her academic career has taught the poetry of George Herbert at Barrington College and Roger Williams University. She has presented papers on the connection between Herbert and C.S. Lewis, and continues to encourage others to appropriate the spiritual feast found in Herbert’s works. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Christian Study.
