The Bible and the Soul
Books, movies and research on near-death experiences proliferate. One can hardly visit a bookstore or open a newsweekly without hearing the latest claim of a visit to heaven or an experience of the afterlife. On the other hand, neuroscientists, philosophers and many biblical scholars claim that existence apart from the body is impossible, the Christians among them underscoring the biblical hope of bodily resurrection. This class will examine the biblical evidence (Old Testament, Intertestamental and New Testament) showing why people of good faith come to differing conclusions about the intermediate state while ultimately affirming that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" even before the resurrection of the body.
This class, taught in this expanded form at Trinity Presbyterian Church in 2013, was originally developed as a four-part lecture series that was delivered at the Center for Christian Study in 2007.
