Hospitality events at the Study Center seek to provide University of Virginia parents, alumni, and students with educational resources, service opportunities, and gathering opportunities.
Move-In Day Lunch
The Move-In Day Lunch is an annual gathering that began in 1999 when a small group of parents recognized the need to welcome the arriving class and their families on behalf of the believing community here. Each August since then, we've filled every square foot of the building with First Years, transfer students, moms, dads, siblings and, of course, sandwich fixings. Unload the U-Haul and head to Chancellor Street for lunch and conversation with Grounds ministers, University faculty, and fellow incoming students.
Information about Move-In Day Lunch 2017, including dates, registration, and volunteer opportunities, will be available at a later date.
May 4–6 and 8–11, 2017
At the end of each semester, the Study Center transitions into “exam central” as students pack the building around the clock. We love having them here for longer stretches because we can come alongside them and hear how they are really doing. They introduce us to their friends, we pray with them, and then watch them blow off steam in pretty entertaining ways.
In the spirit of fine traditions, we will be hosting Exam Snacks (or feasts) during UVA’s exam week. For many, this event is the highlight of their semester! We anticipate feeding between 175 and 350 students per snack, 2-3 times per day, which means hosting a Move-In Day sized event every day!
Are you interested in helping? We are looking for 100 families who can contribute financially, prepare a snack, or host a snack with other parents. If you'd like to make a donation you can send a check to Shelly's attention at the Study Center, or make a gift online through our UVA Fund account.
If you would like to participate, please call or email Shelly Pellish. Thank you for your care for students. To say they are already excited is an understatement.
Family Weekend Reception
Join us at the Study Center for hors d'oeuvres and refreshments before you head out to dinner or an a cappella concert with your family! This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect with Study Center staff as well as other families.
Information about 2017 Family Weekend Reception, including dates, registration, and volunteer opportunities, will be available at a later date.
Graduation Day Lunch
May 20–May 21, 2017 from 12:00–4:00 p.m.
The Study Center will host a lunch for all graduating students and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the time spent with our fourth-year students and look forward to congratulating them in their caps and gowns!
Our building will be open for families with graduating students Friday through Sunday to serve as a gathering place for you to rest, use our internet, grab a cup of coffee, or just take advantage of a space with clean restrooms.
Study Center Homecomings Tailgate
Each year, the Study Center staff decks out in blue and orange to cheer on the Hoos at the Homecomings football game. With so many alumni back in town for the weekend, the tailgate is a great chance for Cavaliers, young and old, to gather with one another, grab some grub, and maybe even sing a round of “The Good Old Song.”
The tailgate is open to students, parents, alumni, and friends. We will gather at the Newsome Family Tailgate (East Lot A, # 182) two hours prior to kickoff.
Information about 2017 Homecomings Tailgate, including dates, registration, and volunteer opportunities, will be available at a later date.
January 14-21, 2017
Each January, the Study Center seeks to care for women during UVA's sorority recruitment. In 2011, the Inter-Sorority Council invited the Study Center to be an official "warming house" during recruitment, which means that every woman rushing enters our building at some point during the recruitment process each year. A collection of non-Greek students, parents and alumni serve as volunteers alongside our staff by preparing coffee and snacks, and checking in with girls in this safe and welcoming environment. This annual hospitality event gives us the opportunity to care for our neighbors on Chancellor St. and for first-year students.
June 10, 2017 from 4:00–6:00 p.m.
In conjunction with UVA's Alumni Reunions Weekend each June, the Center for Christian Study hosts a Christian Fellowship Reception for our alumni in their reunion year. Drop by to visit with your fellow Wahoo alumni, old friends, and Study Center staff.
The Study Center’s regional gatherings are designed for UVA parents, alumni, prospective families, and friends to learn more about the Study Center's ministry, meet its directors, and hear more about University life. We will be traveling to a few locations this fall, with specific locations and times to be announced.
If you would like to volunteer to host a regional gathering or have questions about an upcoming event, please contact Shelly Pellish.
