Spiritual Friendship: A Vision for Gay and Lesbian Christians in the Church Today

October 3, 2013

The Bible prohibits sex outside of a marriage between one man and one woman. But where does that leave Christians who struggle with same sex attraction? Contrary to what the church often implies, celibacy—including the celibacy of gay and lesbian Christians—isn't equivalent to a lack of love. Abstaining from sex only makes sense in a wider Christian community that is committed to pursuing friendship and hospitality. Speaking as a celibate gay Christian man, Wesley Hill describes this vision of 'spiritual friendship' and how it may speak to the lives of gay and lesbian people in the church today.
