Bob was a student at UVa Law from 1973-1976. He was part of the Study Center's first Law Christian Fellowship. He was discipled through the Study Center by Daryl Richman, Ken Elzinga, and Beat Steiner during the Study Center's first year (1975). Bob met his wife Denise at Trinity Presbyterian Church and they were married by Skip Ryan in Charlottesville in 1982. Bob and Denise now live in Charlottesville. They have three children and five grandchildren.

From 1983-2020, Bob was a Professor of Law at Pepperdine University. While there, he was the Director and Founder of the Nootbaar Institute on Law, Religion, and Ethics and co-founder of the Global Justice Program. Bob has traveled to Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and China, assisting global justice groups, supervising students, consulting with governments on religious freedom issues, and speaking on religion and law. He has written or edited 10 books, most recently "The Servant Lawyer: Facing the Challenges of Christian Faith and Everyday Law Practice" (IVP Academic, 2024).
