The magisterial Protestant reformers did not seek to re-invent Christianity but to reform and restore it to its historical and biblical roots. John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion is Calvin’s attempt to lay a theological foundation for this widespread church reform. Many Protestant denominations today continue to lean on Calvin’s Institutes for their doctrinal foundation. We will study together key sections of the Institutes, making note along the way of where Calvin sought reform in the church of his day, and how it applies to us today.
