Board Chair

Marta has worked as a counselor and consultant in a variety of settings for all 35 years of her professional life. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), she volunteers at the Center for Christian Study and provides free, confidential and short-term counseling to students.

Marta received her undergraduate degree from Wheaton College and her graduate degree from Boston University. She met her husband Rob at Wheaton and they were married in 1986. They have two married, adult children and one grandson. Their daughter Ellie McKinnon Thornton, along with her husband Grayson Thornton, graduated from UVA in 2016 and spent many happy days at The Study Center while in college. Marta and Rob are delighted by a new phase in life as grandparents, especially after moving to Charlottesville 7 years ago to be near their children and families. They are members of Church of the Good Shepherd.
