Director of Graduate Ministries

Rick joined the Study Center in 2016 as its part-time Director of Graduate Ministries for Law Christian Fellowship and Darden Christian Fellowship. He holds a B.A. with honors in economics and JD, both from UVA. Prior to joining the Study Center, Rick worked in an array of senior law and public policy positions in government, private law practice, and private industry, ranging from Counselor to the Secretary and Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the US Department of Health & Human Services, to Senior Assistant to the Attorney General and Trial Attorney at the US Department of Justice.

In private law practice, he co-chaired the firm’s tax-exempt law practice, serving national and international nonprofits and ministries. Along the way he has helped to form policy on issues spanning national healthcare, welfare reform, science and technology innovation, protection of human rights, privacy, and religious freedom. He is a lecturer in public policy at UVA’s Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, where he teaches the core course Integrating Ethics in Public Policy.

Rick and his wife Shannon met at UVA and have three grown sons. Before moving to Charlottesville in the fall of 2016, they were longtime members of The Falls Church Anglican in Northern Virginia, where Rick taught the adult Bible class for almost two decades.
