Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell: What the Bible Actually Says

For many Christians, our ideas of heaven and hell are more influenced by things like the teachings of Plato and Dante’s Inferno than they are by Scripture. In this small group, we will attempt to untangle popular ideas about life after death from what the Bible actually teaches.

What happens when we die? When you imagine heaven, do you picture someone talking to St. Peter at the pearly gates, or playing a harp while sitting on an impossibly fluffy white cloud? Or maybe you see people floating around as disembodied spirits? Do they have halos? Or wings?

Or, when you picture hell, do you imagine an angry red figure with a pitchfork and flames bursting forth from all directions? What do you smell? What do you hear? What is this place like?

We’ll explore questions like:

What does the Old Testament say about life after death? What is Sheol?
What does the phrase “weeping and gnashing of teeth” mean?
Why are there so many different views on Hell? How do we know which one is right?
Will we have bodies in heaven?
What does Scripture mean by the “new heavens and new earth?”
What will we spend eternity doing?
